Utah County Criminal Cases: Courts, Jail, Bail, and Public Defenders
General information, not legal advice. Read the full disclaimer.
Short answer: In Utah County, adults who are booked go to the Utah County Jail at 3075 North Main, Spanish Fork (801-851-4000). Misdemeanor and traffic cases are usually heard in a city or county justice court; felonies and more serious cases go to the Fourth District Court. If the charge carries possible jail, the court must tell you at your first court appearance that you have a right to a lawyer, and a judge decides whether you are indigent (income at or below 150% of the federal poverty level, or unable to pay for a lawyer without giving up food, shelter, clothing or other necessities) and so entitled to a court-appointed defender (Utah Code §§ 78B-22-201, -202).
Who this guide is for
Families and defendants in Utah County (Provo, Orem, Lehi, American Fork, Spanish Fork, Payson, Saratoga Springs and the surrounding area) trying to figure out the practical steps after an arrest or a citation. This is general information, not legal advice; confirm contact details and hours with the office before you go.
1. The jail (arrest and booking)
According to the Sheriff's Office jail orientation page:
- Address: 3075 North Main, Spanish Fork, UT 84660. Phone: 801-851-4000.
- Find someone: use the Sheriff's inmate search by name or booking number. Booking information can take time to appear after an arrest.
- Bail: the jail accepts cash, cashier's check, money order, or credit card (credit cards are in person and carry a fee). It does not accept personal checks or loose change. Cashier's checks and money orders are made out to "The Utah County Jail." Bail can't begin until booking is complete, which can take several hours.
- Release: standard release time is 3:15 p.m. if the person went to court that day, and the jail needs paperwork saying "Released by Judge" or "ROR" (released on own recognizance); "warrant recalled" alone is not enough.
- Court dates: the jail can't give court dates; contact the court that has the case.
- Phone calls: inmates can place calls between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m., generally up to 20 minutes; the jail doesn't deliver non-emergency messages.
- Visits: visits are remote video through Securus, with registration, approval time and per-minute fees; check the jail's page for current rules.
- Money for the account and mail: the page lists the online, phone, mail and kiosk options; use USPS only and include the inmate's name and booking number.

2. Which court hears the case
| Court | Typical cases | Where (per Utah Courts and the county) |
|---|---|---|
| Justice courts (city or county) | Class B and C misdemeanors, traffic, many DUIs and local ordinance violations | The Utah County Justice Court is at 151 S University Ave, Provo (801-851-7200, Mon–Fri 8:00–4:30); cities such as Orem, Lehi and American Fork also run their own justice courts, so the citation names the court |
| Fourth District Court | Felonies, class A misdemeanors in many situations, and cases bound over from justice court | Utah Courts lists locations in Provo (137 N Freedom Blvd; 801-429-1098), American Fork (75 E 80 N) and Spanish Fork (775 W Center St) |
| Fourth District Juvenile Court | Under-18 cases | Offices in Provo, American Fork and Spanish Fork |
Addresses and which location handles a particular case can change, so check the citation or call the clerk. The County Attorney's Office (100 East Center Street, Suite 2100, Provo; 801-851-8026) prosecutes crimes and has a Victim Services page and a Criminal Case Process link. Many cities use their own city prosecutors for misdemeanors.
3. Court-appointed defense (public defender)
- Right to a lawyer: an adult charged with an offense that could result in incarceration must be told of the right to counsel no later than the first court appearance (§ 78B-22-201).
- Who qualifies: the court must find a person indigent if their income is at or below 150% of the federal poverty level, or if they lack the means to pay for a lawyer and expenses without depriving themselves or their family of food, shelter, clothing or other necessities, considering property, debts, dependents, the expected burden of the case and a private lawyer's reasonable fees (§ 78B-22-202). A court can't find someone indigent if they gave away assets after the offense to qualify.
- How you apply: ask the judge at your first appearance, and be ready to fill out an affidavit of indigency (§ 78B-22-201.5 is referenced in the statute). If you can't complete the form, the court can still find you indigent.
- Who is appointed: a defender employed by or contracted with the county's indigent defense system; you can't choose the lawyer (§ 78B-22-203). In Utah County this is generally handled through the Utah County Public Defender Association. More: Public Defender Eligibility in Utah.
